This is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure also known as permanent makeup. It can be used for the head (micro scalp pigmentation), eyebrows (micro eyebrow pigmentation), lips (lip blushing), eyes (permanent eyeliner), facial hair (micro facial pigmentation) and more.
The process involves depositing pigment ink into the dermis layer of the skin. It is considered a semi-permanent to permanent procedure and can last many years, depending on the procedure.
Hair pigmentation and scalp pigmentation refer to a cosmetic technique done on the scalp of the head. It is often called SMP, scalp micro pigmentation, hair tattoo, scalp tattoo, head tattoo hair, hairline tattoo, smp hair, hair micropigmentation, micro scalp pigmentation, and tattoo hairline.
SMP is done on both men and women experiencing hair loss, such as male pattern baldness, alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, female pattern baldness, and androgenetic alopecia. Most of the hair micro pigmentation is done for men. Still, SMP for women has been steadily growing in popularity as more women suffering from thinning hair have discovered this relatively new technique to add density to their hair.
For men with a receding hairline, a hair tattoo can recreate the tattoo hairline by placing tiny dots of ink pigment to give the illusion of real hair follicles. An even or uneven hairline can be recreated with the skills of an experienced SMP artist.
SMP hair should be done by an experienced SMP artist. If done incorrectly by an inexperienced or novice SMP artist, you may experience the term “scalp micropigmentation regrets.” Fortunately, a hair tattoo can be easily removed using a laser, such as the Picosure laser. (We offer SMP removal in our Richmond Hill clinic).
“Should I shave my head” for micro scalp pigmentation? It depends. If you need a hairline restoration using SMP, shaving your head to give you that buzz-cut hairstyle would be the best advice. But if you are experiencing thinning hair, you can use SMP to add density without cutting your hair. SMP for women is done for this reason, to add density to thinning hair by adding the tiny dots between the hair follicles.
At Hair Tattoo Clinic, our main SMP centre is in Toronto. We have 4 other micro-pigmentation clinics in Mississauga, Brampton, and Richmond Hill. We specialize in SMP in all clinics. However, we do eyebrow pigmentation, lip blushing, and eyeliner tattoos at our Richmond Hill and hair loss clinic in Toronto.
SMP cost in Canada varies because the industry isn’t regulated. What that means is buyer beware. An SMP hair loss specialist is highly trained in micro scalp pigmentation. However, anyone can learn this technique in a few days and put a sign on their clinic and say they specialize in micro pigmentation.
We do not recommend going to any clinic that doesn’t specialize in SMP as you may experience scalp micropigmentation regrets, as mentioned before. A reputable SMP hair clinic in the Toronto GTA should do a minimum of 3 sessions, and the price range is usually between $3,000 and $4,000, depending on the coverage required.
Permanent makeup is often called micro pigmentation, cosmetic tattooing, permanent cosmetics and derma pigmentation. Permanent makeup usually refers to a cosmetic technique using tattoos on areas of the face (eyebrows, eyelids, and lips).
It is also used for other body parts, such as recreating the breast’s areola after surgery. It can be used to cover facial and body scars such as vitiligo.
Micro pigmentation eyebrows are a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure used to recreate the appearance of eyebrows. It is also known as eyebrow tattoos, microblading, micro shading, or ombre brows, and there are different techniques used for eyebrow pigmentation.
Eyebrow tattoos are considered permanent tattoos, using a traditional tattoo machine to cover the eyebrow area with solid ink. In contrast, microblading uses different inks and tiny blades to recreate the look of eyebrow hairs, providing a more realistic result.
However, microblading lasts only 1 to 2 years, so regular touch-ups are required. Micro pigmentation eyebrow procedures and training are available. CLICK HERE for more info.
Lip micro pigmentation is a semi-permanent makeup for the lips. Often called lip blushing, lip liner, and lip shading, it uses a traditional tattoo technique and the results last 2 to 3 years before a touch-up is required.
A lip liner can make thin lips look fuller or create a balanced-looking lip if it looks uneven. Lip blushing adds depth and colour to the lips. Ideal for pale lips or loss of colour. Lip shading is a procedure that uses a combination of lip lining and lip colouring.

A micro pigmentation eyeliner is a semi-permanent makeup that inserts pigment along the top and bottom of the eyelashes using a tattoo device. The purpose is to define the eyes and give the illusion of darker, thicker and fuller lashes.

SMP is a micropigmentation permanent makeup procedure that involves tattooing tiny dots on the scalp to add density and create the illusion of natural hair follicles. The procedure is often referred to as a hairline tattoo or hair tattoo scalp tattoo.
SMP treatment can be used to recreate a new hairline, fill in thinning hair, add density to a buzz cut, or provide fuller hair. A skilled SMP artist will create a customized treatment plan that suits the individual’s unique needs and desired outcome.
